One of the most important things your blog should do is keep your visitors engaged for the longest amount of time possible. Your goal is to make them visit a few pages, maybe comment, and hopefully earn you some money. You probably already know the basics of keeping your visitors on your site:

Content: Provide great content that helps your reader in some way.

Design: Good design; Easy to navigate.

Related posts: Appears after post, which comes up with a list of articles related to the one you just read.

Today I will be showing you an instant technique you can apply to your website that I used to increase time spent on my site and that actually helped reduce my bounce rate.

When I reveal this "trick" you might be surprised and think "Hey why didn't I think of that". It is actually very simple and not much of a trick at all if you really think about it.

So what is the secret?

Videos.

Videos?

Yeah I said videos. Videos keep your visitors engaged for a longer amount of time on your site then with just with a regular blog post.

Now please do not go out and begin fetching random videos from the web or start recording your cat thinking it entertaining. First here are some general rules to follow. Try to find videos that are:

Entertaining, Useful or Both: Please do not post a thirty minute video explaining a long complicated math algorithm or a random video about what your cat does on a day to day basis. Most people will find that boring. Try to find something that will benefit your reader, make them laugh, or both. These types of videos work best.

Longer isn't always better: Try to find or make videos in the 90 second time line. Your visitors only have the attention span of a few seconds so if a video doesn't interest them in the first ten seconds you have the risk of them clicking away.
